Im Zuge des Konzertes KNIGHT$ mit PLASMASCHWARZ am 31. März im Kölner TSUNAMI CLUB (unseren Bericht findet ihr hier) sprachen wir kurz mit JAMES KNIGHTS.
RADIO SCHWARZE WELLE: Hallo James, vorab schon vielen Dank für die Möglichkeit zu diesem Gespräch.
JAMES KNIGHTS: Es ist mir ein Vergnügen, Sir!
RSW: Wie geht es dir?
JAMES: Ich habe keine Ahnung!
RSW: Man kennt dich von Projekten wie SCARLET SOHO, DEMOKRATIE und BOYTRONIC. All diese
Projekte liefern reichlich Zitate an die Achtziger. Was verbindet dich mit diesem Jahrzehnt?
JAMES: Ich bin in den 80ern aufgewachsen und mag die Produktions- und Mischtechniken, mit denen die Leute damals so viele Alben gemacht haben. Das hat sich seit den 90er Jahren etwas verändert, Menschen werden immer lauter, schriller und so weiter.
RSW: Im Gegensatz zu den vorgenannten Projekten, in denen die 80s allgemein überall aufblitzen,
verfolgst du mit KNIGHT$ ja einen anderen Ansatz: hier geht es ausschließlich um den 80s
Italo Disco- Sound. Auch hier die Frage: Wie kommst du dazu, was verbindet dich damit?
JAMES: Es ist witzig! Mir wird oft gesagt, dass ich überhaupt kein Italo Popper bin. Es gibt viele Meinungen da draußen, wenn es darum geht, was diesen Sound ausmacht. Ich gebe mein Bestes, mich zu fokussieren und die Musik zu schreiben, die sich gerade richtig anfühlt!

RSW: Was meinst du, brauchen wir solch unbeschwerte Musik wieder häufiger? Mehr freudiges
Tanzen, statt großer Theatralik?
JAMES: Ich mag beides und es gibt einen Platz für beides. Es fühlt sich aber an, als würden wir fast das Gegenteil von vor Jahren leben. Einst konnte man nur etwas erreichen, wenn man große Popsongs schrieb. Gute Popmusik ist jetzt eigentlich ziemlich uncool. Wenn du keine persönlichen Texte schreibst, in tiefer Tonlage singst oder dunkle Klamotten trägst, kann es für Leute schwierig sein, offen zuzuhören und loszulassen. Aber meistens lieben sie meine Show am Ende des Sets!
RSW: Wie ist die Situation momentan für einen Live Musiker, der in einer sehr speziellen Sparte
agiert, gerade insbesondere nach der Pandemie?
JAMES: Es ist viel besser geworden. Alles ist wieder fast normal und ich genieße es, live zu spielen und alle im Publikum tanzen zu sehen.
RSW: Dein letztes Album ‚Dollars & Cents‚ ist bereits 4 Jahre alt und zuletzt gab es im Frühjahr
letzten Jahres die „Extended Maxi Version“ der 2021er Single „Boom Bang Boom“. Arbeitest
du bereits an neuem Material?
JAMES: Ja, es wird dieses Jahr eine neue EP auf Vinyl geben. Neue Tracks, eine Coverversion, einen Remix und vielleicht auch einen Live-Song.
RSW: Schon eine Idee, wann wir damit rechnen können?
JAMES: Im Winter!
RSW: Wann und wo sind weitere Auftritte als KNIGHT$ geplant?
JAMES: Wir fliegen im Mai nach Mexiko, um für DRAB MAJESTY zu eröffnen. Ich freue mich sehr darauf, zum ersten Mal dort zu spielen und das Publikum zu erleben.
RSW: Mit BOYTRONIC stehst du ja bereits morgen wieder auf der Bühne und dann am 7. April in
Basel/ Schweiz. Wie sehen deine Pläne mit diesem Projekt aus? Wohin wird die Entwicklung
von DEMOKRATIE führen und wird es irgendwann wieder etwas von SCARLET SOHO geben,
deren spezieller Stil trotz einiger Retro- Anleihen doch seiner Zeit etwas voraus war?
JAMES: In diesem Jahr jährt sich BOYTRONIC’s ‚Working Model‚ LP zum 40. Mal. So spielen wir ein paar Special Shows in Hamburg, Deutzen, Helsingborg, München etc. Bei den älteren Projekten lasse ich immer die Tür offen, aber leider ist es schwer, die Zeit zu finden. Man weiß nie, was noch so passieren wird…

RADIO SCHWARZE WELLE: Hello James and thank you for the opportunity to have this conversation.
JAMES KNIGHTS: My pleasure sir!
RSW: How do you do?
JAMES: I have no idea!
RSW: You’ve been known from projects like SCARLET SOHO, DEMOKRATIE and BOYTRONIC. All
these projects provide abundant quotations from the 1980s. What’s your connection to this
decade?
JAMES: I grew up throughout the 80s, and I really like the production and mixing techniques people
used to make so many of the albums at that time. It’s not been quite the same since the
90s, with people getting louder and louder and so on.
RSW: In contrast to the aforementioned projects, in which the 80s flash up everywhere in general,
with KNIGHT$ you follow a different approach: here it is all about the 80s Italo disco sound.
Here again the question: How did it come about, what connects you to it?
JAMES: It’s funny! I’m often told by people I am not Italo at all. There are many opinions out there
when it comes to what this sound is. I do my best to focus and write the music that feels
right for me at the time!

RSW: What do you think, do we need such carefree music more often? More joyful dancing,
instead of great theatricality?
JAMES: I like both and there is a place for both, but it feels like we are almost living the opposite of
how it was years ago. Once upon a time you could only achieve with big pop songs. Good
pop music is actually quite uncool now. If you’re not writing personal lyrics, singing in a low
register or wearing dark clothes it can be difficult for people to listen with an open mind
and let themselves go, but they usually love my show by the end of the set!
RSW: What is the situation at the moment for a live musician who acts in a very special field,
especially after the pandemic?
JAMES: It’s much better now than it was. Everything is almost normal again, and I really enjoy
playing live and seeing everybody dancing in the audience.
RSW: Your latest album ‚Dollars & Cents‚ is already 4 years old and last time you released the
“Extended Maxi Version” of the 2021 single “Boom Bang Boom” in spring last year. Are you
already working on new material?
JAMES: Yes, there will be a new EP this year on vinyl. New tracks, a cover version, remix and maybe
a live song too.
RSW: Any idea when we can expect that?
JAMES: In the Winter!
RSW: When and where are further performances as KNIGHT$ planned?
JAMES: We are heading to Mexico in May to open for Drab Majesty. I’m very excited to go there for
the first time and experience the audience.
RSW: With BOYTRONIC you will be back on stage tomorrow in Darmstadt and then on April 7th in
Basel/ Switzerland. What are your plans for this project? Where will the development of
DEMOKRATIE lead and will there ever be something new of SCARLET SOHO again, whose
special style was a little ahead of its time despite some retro borrowings?
JAMES: This year is the 40th anniversary of Boytronic’s Working Model LP. So we are playing a few
special shows in Hamburg, Deutzen, Helsingborg, and Munich etc. I always leave the door
open with the older projects, but it can be hard to find the time sadly. You never know
what will happen later…
